The journey

From one vacant shop to 20+ counters.

  1. 1975
    The spark · age 15

    The double-sided shirt

Born in 1960, Jaideep Singh had an eye for fabric, fit and cut from his school days. At 15 he spotted a two-toned fabric and imagined a shirt that could be worn either way. Master tailors laughed at the idea. He sat with a roadside tailor for two hours a day for a week, working out the seams, labels and buttons until it worked.

The lesson stayed with him: great fashion is about having the courage to make what does not exist yet.

  2. 1978
    The beginning · age 18

A badminton bet and Jean Hut

Jaideep began his Chartered Accountancy studies on one condition: his future would be in business. When he found a vacant shop on Lawrence Road, he played a friendly badminton match against his father’s senior colleague, with his father’s consent at stake. He won, and his father gave him his blessing to start his own business, along with ₹10,000.

With that and ₹3,000 of his own savings, he opened Jean Hut, Punjab’s first made-to-order denim shop. For five years he opened in the morning, locked up at 1 PM for CA office hours, reopened from 6 to 10 PM, and studied late into the night.

  3. The Jean Hut years
    Craft and grit

    Pumice stones at midnight

When stonewashed denim became the rage in the big cities, sending small batches to Delhi was not possible. Jaideep sourced pumice stones and scrubbed denim by hand late at night. The first shirt in the window brought dozens of custom orders in a single day, and customers began travelling from Firozpur, Tarn Taran, Gurdaspur and Pathankot for a made-to-measure fit.

  4. 1983
    Age 23

A Chartered Accountant who chose the counter

Jaideep qualified as a Chartered Accountant ahead of his peers. A corporate career was open to him; he chose the shop floor and his customers, and went into business full time.

  5. 1985
    Wardrobe opens

From denim to a complete wardrobe

Building on Jean Hut, Jaideep opened Wardrobe in 1985, moving beyond made-to-order denim into complete ready-to-wear collections and bringing the latest international fashion, blended with local taste, to Amritsar.

  6. 1995
    A new address

Putting Lawrence Road Extension on the map

Wardrobe expanded to a quiet, unpaved stretch called Dasonda Singh Road. Jaideep printed “Lawrence Road Extension” on every letter and receipt, and kept correcting postmen and couriers until the city adopted the name. On opening day the road was jammed from 10 AM until nightfall.

  7. 2002
    The flagship

    Punjab’s largest clothing showroom

Wardrobe opened what was then the largest clothing showroom in Punjab, a multi-storey destination that drew retail visitors from as far as Delhi.

  8. Today
    48 years

    40+ brands, one family

Jean Hut laid the foundation of fit and trust; Wardrobe scaled it. Today Wardrobe brings 40+ national and international brands under one roof across 20+ showrooms and franchise counters in Punjab. The second generation has modernised the systems and the stores, while the personal service from the first counter stays the same.
